About M4V

M4V is a video format made by Apple, and it’s very similar to MP4. It’s often used for movies, TV shows, podcasts, and videos you buy or download from iTunes. Some M4V files are protected with DRM, which means they only play on authorized devices. Even so, most media players that support MP4 can usually play M4V files too.

When was M4V created?

It was introduced by Apple in 2006.

What codecs does M4V support?

It supports H.264 and H.265 video codecs with AAC audio.

Fun facts about M4V

– Some M4V files have copy protection. Movies or shows bought from Apple could use DRM, which means they only play on approved Apple devices or accounts.

– Changing .m4v to .mp4 sometimes works. If the file is not protected and uses supported codecs, renaming the extension may let more apps open it.

– People often confuse M4V with a codec. It is a container format, not the actual video compression method itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this converter convert M4V files with DRM protection?

No. That is not supported.

What is the difference between M4V and MP4?

The two formats are nearly the same under the hood. Apple built M4V on the MP4 container and uses it mainly for iTunes content. What sets M4V apart is that some files include Apple’s FairPlay copy protection, restricting playback to authorized Apple devices and accounts. Without that protection, an M4V behaves like a standard MP4 file.

How long do you keep my files?

Not long at all. The file you upload is used only to run your conversion and is securely deleted the moment it finishes. The converted file stays on our servers for 24 hours so you have time to download it, and then it is securely deleted as well.

Is there a size limit on the videos I upload?

Yes. Uploads can be up to 2048 MB, or 2 GB.
